The word sociology is derived from the Latin word socius, which means companion and the suffix -logy, which means to study. It dates as far back as the ancient Greek philosopher Plato. Sociology was officially created by by the French philosopher of science, Auguste Comte in 1838. Comte used this term to describe a new way of looking at society.
